Back Cover
Depression affects as many as one in eight teenagers in the
United States, and more than 17 million Americans each year. Women are
affected twice as often as men, beginning in the teen years. The bottom
line? About 25 percent of all women and 12 percent of all men will suffer
from depression at some time in their life. Depression is an illness that
can and does strike people of all ages, races, and economic groups. The
good news is that millions have fought the battle against the illness, and
many have won.
In Depression: What It Is, How to Beat It, author Linda Wasmer Smith
clearly explains the three major types of depression, what causes
depression, how to figure out whether someone is depressed, and what
treatments and other resources exist to conquer the illness. She includes
stories of teens who have been depressed and describes how they have dealt
with the problem.
